salt air

september 2023

A dear friend sent me a message asking if I can make a painting for her. I asked what she wants me to paint, and she said I can make whatever I want. It took me some time thinking what to paint for her -- I considered what she's like, the things that interest her, her values, and what she likes to do. I also lurked on her Instagram page and noticed that she has plenty of photos of the beach. I thought, "she seems to like the beach". She also has a good relationship with her husband and I know that this artwork will be displayed in their home.

That's when I decided to make a painting where the setting is at the beach. I thought it can be something where she and her husband are walking by the beach while watching the sunset. I used vibrant colors because I see them as a sweet and happy couple. Their sense of humor makes me laugh all the time.

It actually took me a while to finish this painting. During the process, I started getting doubts whether I can do it or not. There was a moment when I didn't believe that I was the right person to paint something for others. I also have a full-time job and does a lot of different hobbies that keep me busy. But I made sure that I was in contact with this client (friend) regarding the progress to set expectations.

I started working on this painting in a canvas board. I initially used acrylic because that's what I have been using at that time. Then a few weeks later, I started learning oil painting so I also incorporated a little bit of oil in some parts of this painting.

I called the painting "salt air" because it's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the beach in summertime. This friend is a fellow-Swiftie and Taylor Swift has a song that has a reference to the lyrics salt air. (playing 'august' on Spotify)

I'm really grateful that she asked me to make a commission painting for her. It was challenging for me because I don't normally paint with the thought that it will be for someone else. I appreciated the trust that she gave me for doing this artwork when I was just starting my journey as an artist.

Whenever I go to their house, I can see this painting framed in their living room. My grateful heart feels proud and happy about it.
